Gustavo (Gus) was an amazing guide for our Dorado trip in April in Buenos Aires. He picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel, and gave us a full 12 hours on the water at an incredibly reasonable price. For anyone looking to fish out of Buenos Aires for a day, I highly recommend First Cast. Gus was professional, friendly, knowledgeable and a joy to be with. The website is dead on with its description of Gus and his local knowledge. Hearing his stories of Patagonia fly fishing and upriver larger dorado, I definitely want to come back! Our time with Gus got off to a great start - we rented an Airbnb which ended up being just a few houses from his in Junin! 

It's hard to capture all the benefits of fishing with Gus for 2 days but here are a few of the highlights:

- He provided great instruction in casting which we both needed

- He knew the places along the river each day which were the best place to locate fish

- He frequently got out of the boat in the shallows to hold us in place as we casted and also to net the fish

- He provided plenty of details about the geography and history of the areas where we floated 

- After the first float day he recommended we float a different part of the river vs wading/walking - turned out ot be a great decision as we caught more and bigger fish the second day

- He provided great lunches both days

- Needless to say his proficiency in English was invaluable

It was a great experience in many ways. We greatly appreciate the professional and personal service you both provided.

Both Mark (in Colorado) and Gus (in Argentina) are highly professional with solid communication skills. We floated for 2 days with Gus and he provided great instruction in casting, reading the river, and information about the geography and history of the areas in which we floated. We hoped to catch fish and did just that! Gus frequently got out of the boat to hold it in places where the fishing was hot. He'd also get out to net and release the fish. My fishing partner and I considered staying at an all inclusive lodge but opted instead for a DIY trip to the Junin / San Martin area and we are very happy we did. Argentina latest COVID 19 travel information (copy/paste):

November 1st, entry of all foreigners is authorized.  Per the Argentina government, the following will be requested to enter the country:

• Complete vaccination schedule, with the last application date at least 14 days prior to arrival in the country.
• Negative PCR test in the 72 hours prior to shipment, or antigen at the point of entry until defined by the health authority.
• CRP test on day 5 to 7 of arrival until defined by the health authority.

Those people who do not present a complete vaccination schedule, including minors, must perform quarantine, antigen test upon admission, and PCR test on day 7.

COVID 19 Travel Guidelines (copy/paste)

The summer tourist season in Neuquén begins on December 1, 2020.  The provincial resolution establishes the conditions of entry to tourist towns for citizens living in the province of other provinces and also foreigners.

Tourists domiciled outside the Province of Neuquén (Argentines or Foreigners):

• Manage the corresponding Unique Enabling Certificate for Circulation (CUHC), which covers the nature of an Affidavit, through the application "CuidAR", and carry out the self-diagnosis of symptoms compatible with COVID-19.
• Accredit name and proof of reservation of the destination enabled tourist accommodation (cabins, inns, hotels, apart hotels, organized camping) and itinerary; or name, surname and address of the family member(s) residing at the destination with which they will stay, and which allows their stay.
• Submit COVID-19 Traveler Insurance policy for people over 60 years old and groups risk, which must include in the case of contagion or manifestation of the disease during the stay, lodging and food coverage for 14 days; medical care and travel expenses to the city of origin, both for the patient and for her close contacts.
• Comply with the documentation and biosafety controls that each jurisdiction applies provincial and / or municipal, in the different tourist destinations and / or on national or provincial routes or roads.

In 1999, for 12 months, I DIY hiked and fished from Tierra del Fuego to Columbia, and from the Galapagos Islands to Brazil.  Since then, I have returned many times, managed a lodge, and now offer Argentina and Chile fishing programs.

As far as I know, I was the first to start a Patagonia guided DIY fishing business.  When I started, I purposely chose not to repeat or copy any existing Patagonia business models, books, films, or other.  Instead, I chose to create a team of real, DIY hearted people/guides.  Like me, no one on my team is a paid model, filmmaker, or pro-team member.  We have no desire to be social media fishing celebrities, or big dog booking agents.  You won't see us at shows, in films or magazines, pimping a lifestyle.  We simply take people fishing, and clients love what we do!
