Fort Collins Fly Fishing: Cameron Pass

Today's Blog Post

Q: Do you offer services in the Cameron Pass area?

A: Yes, we offer lessons and guiding.

Q: Is the fishing difficult?

A: No.  It's one of the best locations to learn how to fly fish because there are plenty of hungry fish - you will catch many fish and learn critical skills - the experience is like training wheels for fly fishing.

Q: Why fly fish in the Cameron Pass area?

A: 1) No traffic and fewer people, 2) Escape summer heat - cool off at +/- 10,000 feet, 3) Stunning scenery, wildlife, and great alpine lake and creek fishing.

Q: Where is Cameron Pass located?

A: Up highway 14, approximately 1.5 - 2.0 hours from Fort Collins.

Q: Are the creeks, rivers, lakes and reservoirs far to walk?

A: Reservoirs offer quick-easy access. Alpine lakes can take up to 60 minutes, and are moderate to difficult. Creeks/Rivers can be an easy 10 minutes walk-in, or, a moderate 2-6 mile hike-in.

Wild Cutthroat in the 8" - 20" range

Q: What species?

A: The creeks and rivers will be loaded with Cutthroat and Brook Trout.  Alpine lakes will hold Cutthroat.  Joe Wright Reservoirs holds Arctic Grayling.

Q: About how many fish can I expect to catch, and what is the size range?

A: Depending on skill level, and length of time fishing, we've had clients catch up to 30 fish, and the average size range is 6"-12", with some Cutthroats up to 22".

Q: What techniques will we use?

A: Nearly all techniques work.  Using fly rods 2wt-5wt, we regularly use dry flies, dry-dropper, and nymphs.

Q: We might camp in the Cameron Pass area - can we do a fly casting lesson one day, and then hire you to guide us the next day?

A: Yes.  Nearly all of our Cameron pass trips combine the following: 1-2 overnight camping, with 1-3 days of fly fishing.  If you are a beginner, we highly recommend the combination of a fly casting lesson and guiding.

Q: How long is a day of guiding and what are your prices?

A: In the Cameron pass area, we offer four, six, and eight hours per day.  Please see pricing information in the link below.

His first Brown Trout while using a tightline nymph technique.  Fish was caught using a Sage ESN 10'6" 3wt nymph fly rod.

We caught plenty of trout on dry flies.  We used a noodly Redington Classic Trout 7'6" 2wt fly rod, with a Redington 3/4 Zero reel and 3wt Rio creek line - it's an excellent $ value rod-reel combo, ideal for small streams and creeks.

Fort Collins Fly Fishing: Beginner Level Guiding

 Today's Blog Post

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting/guiding a family from Iowa.  They have limited warm water fishing experience, and they have never used fly fishing equipment.

I quickly discovered the 12 year old girl is a fly fishing prodigy - she easily out fished her dad, and caught lots of trout on a dry fly, dry-dropper, and a tightline nymph rig (with my 10'6" 3wt rod).  Also, in quick time, she mastered vertical plane casting, false casting, roll casting, mending, hook set, stripping line, playing/fighting fish, and easily (fearlessly) picked up fish for the best photos - it was truly amazing to watch her!

Our beginner guide service option includes one hour of on-land casting instruction followed by in-water fishing.  We always end with a fun-goofy pic.

12 year old fishing machine - next Joan Wulff?

Rain the previous nights created high dirty water, but we managed to catch a couple dozen fish each day.

Fort Collins Fly Fishing Lessons: Testimonial

Today's Blog Post

The below photo and video features a student casting with his dominant right hand and his non-dominant left hand.  By the end of the class he could comfortably and accurately cast with both hands, hitting hula hoop targets at 30, 40 and 50 feet.

Hell Yeah!  Thank you man!  I had a blast today and I am really looking forward to trying out what I learned.
